End of Support for Magento 2.3 | Magento 2.3 End of Life

Magento Open Source and Adobe Commerce 2.3.x had officially reached the end of their life cycle.

According to Adobe Commerce lifecycle policy, starting from September 8, 2022, they won’t provide support and security fixes for Magento 2.3

Even though the platform is not new (it was initially released on November 28, 2018), many stores still rely on it. As of writing this article, 36,246 websites use Magento 2.3.

If you are the store owner of one of them, read on to know how Magento 2.3 end of life can affect you.

How Will Magento 2.3 End of Life Affect Store Owners?

We recommend everyone who uses Magento 2.3 or older versions to upgrade to the latest version of Magento as soon as possible to avert security threats.

By continuing to use Magento 2.3, you open your store to potential problems. Below, we’ll outline some of them.

No Further Updates or Security Patches

After September 7, Magento 2.3 won’t be getting any new updates or security patches. Updates generally address security issues, functionality and performance of your store, bug fixes, PCI compliance, etc.

By missing the update, you will not only lose the ability to use certain new functions but also can put the safety of your and your client’s data at risk since you are making the store vulnerable to potential attacks.

    No Official Support

Magneto 2.3 EOL also means you won’t be able to file a support ticket for this version of Magento and Adobe Commerce. If you suddenly have any issues with your store, you will be left to your own devices to fix them or hire someone to deal with them.

    Limited Magento Marketplace Compatibility

As of right now, you can still download most extensions on the Magento Marketplace. However, since providing the updates for Magento 2.3 is no longer necessary with time, more and more extensions will be unavailable to you. Extension developers won’t make any updates for the extensions you currently have and won’t make any new ones to replace them. This, again, leaves you vulnerable to potential attacks and limits your use of any new services.

    No Official Documentation

Magento DevDocs combines the documentation of multiple APIs in an easily searchable way on the official website. With the end of support, Adobe will archive these pages, making it harder to troubleshoot something or make changes to your store.

What Should You Do About It?

We’ve established by now that the way to go is to upgrade your store to the latest version (as of writing this article, it’s Magento 2.4.5). This way, you can still get all the updates, use the technical support, and download new extensions. If you want to update it by yourself, here are the directions for installation. However, if done incorrectly, the update can cause problems in your store (extensions not working correctly, bugs, data loss). For that reason, we recommend going with a professional web development agency to do the upgrade for you. We offer Magento update services and would be glad to assist you!

    Why Upgrade to Magento 2.4

We’ve already established that staying on the outdated Magento version can potentially cause many problems for your store. Apart from that, there are many other benefits to switching to Magento 2.4:

    • Offers 34% lower chance of site outages;
    • Delivers substantially faster API response times.
